Description

Internationally renowned dermatologist and research scientist Dr. Whitney Bowe presents, for the first time, the connection between a healthy gut and radiant, clear skin, with a 21-day program to maximize skin health and beauty.

Every year, nearly 80 million Americans will consult their doctors about their skin. In fact, skin disorders beat out anxiety, depression, back pain, and diabetes as the number one reason Americans see their doctors. Unfortunately, however, the vast majority will receive only a surface-level treatment, leaving the underlying conditions at the root of their skin issues unresolved. Skin doesn’t lie; it reflects overall health in unimaginable ways.

In The Beauty of Dirty Skin, internationally renowned dermatologist and scientist Dr. Whitney Bowe shows readers that skin health is much more than skin deep. As a pioneering researcher on the cutting edge of the gut-brain-skin axis, she explains how the spectrum of skin disorders — from stubborn acne and rosacea to psoriasis, eczema, and premature wrinkling — are manifestations of irregularities rooted in the gut. Lasers, scalpels, creams, and prescription pads alone will not guarantee the consistently healthy, glowing skin we all seek.

Instead, Dr. Bowe focuses on the microbiome — where trillions of microbes “speak” to your skin via the brain — and highlights the connection between sleep, stress, diet, gastrointestinal health, and the health of your skin. With simple explanations of the science, do-it-yourself practical skincare strategies, and a life-changing 21-day program, The Beauty of Dirty Skin is your roadmap to great skin from the inside out and the outside in.

This book well written and SO informative! Dr. Bowe has done extensive scientific research and thoroughly explains the connection between a healthy gut and healthy skin. She provides simple explanations of the science, practical skin care strategies and a clear and concise three-week plan for clear skin. I’ve tried most of the recipes in the book, and not only are they easy to make, they are DELICIOUS!

Good read learned so much from this little book came really quick too and I love how it’s set out

The GMA interview was enticing so I ordered the book, it is an eye opener and I am rating 4 stars because at times is repetitive so I was skipping pages to get to the next chapters. Overall interesting confirmation of why so many people have issues and how you can avoid skin problems.

And those pants have gotten loser. I don’t think I’ve ever responded to a book the way I did to this one. The first few chapters is very science concentrated, but as the chapters progress the science makes sense. As I read the book, I realized I was already doing about 70% of her recommendations, but by reading more of her tips, it totally motivated me to make the final changes. What are those changes: absolutely no processed food and as little sugar as possible. I miss none of it. I added probiotics and I no longer eat anything that has a food label on it. Everything I buy is fresh and I either eat it fresh (hello mid-morning veggie snacks) or I cook it from fresh food. The only thing that I haven’t been able to achieve yet, is a consistent exercise routine, but that’s only because life is too chaotic. That is the final piece of the puzzle. The results? I’ve dropped a few pounds without even trying and yes, my skin looks great, but it was pretty good before this. I am on my second month of making these changes and love how I feel.

There is a lot of information out there on skin care, but I really appreciated how this book connects the dots between food, lifestyle and skin. I always figured that skin issues were caused by too much oil or bad genes. This book goes deep into the science of how the skin as an organ functions.

Of course your organs are connected to and controlled by your brain, but learning how to control the inputs of your brain through lifestyle choices which indirectly controls your skin was profound.

Call be old fashioned, but I like the weight and feel of a physical book. I’m sure the kindle and ebook is great, but the hardcover book looks and reads excellent.

Bottom line: Buy a copy for yourself, and few extra to give away to friends.

I was looking forward to displaying this book for my clients in my esty room but it came in bad condition

Wow. Love this book already and only on page 27. I am a physician who suffers with acne and rosacea and can’t wait to share this info with my patients!

I LOVE this book. It’s filled with a lot of great information about skin and how to properly care for it. I’ve had acne for over 30 years and it is now under control. I followed several of her recommendations (topical probiotics and Evening Primrose Oil). I’ve started using Probiotics on my face and what a difference. Normally when I get a facial I have quite a few extractions (blemishes that need to be cleaned out). After using probiotics on my face for a few weeks, I only had one small blemish at my last facial. My aesthetician and I were talking about how much better my skin is and how great probiotics are both internally and externally.

I have been anticipating this book for quite some time; Dr Bowe is easily the best qualified physician in North America to tackle the subject of healthy skin. A practicing dermatologist and research-publishing scientist, Dr Bowe translates complex topics and illuminates them in east-to-understand ways. The real-life cases from her clinical practice make it easy to see how diet, stress, lifestyle etc manifest in skin health (or disease). Given the title, there is extensive discussion of the emerging microbiome science and the ways in which microbes can mediate skin health. Refreshingly, this science isn’t oversold in the book. There are plenty of practical solutions but Dr Bowe knows full well how complicated skin conditions can be, and each person’s environment, genetics, resources and lifestyle might manifest in the skin in different ways. So, it’s a good balance of research-based information, hope for future microbiome-based solutions, and steps to take in the here-and-now.
Beautifully written by a pioneer who dismantled the dogma which stated there was NO relationship between diet and acne. There are still lots of research questions on that score, and Dr Bowe refrains from overselling any dietary “cures” for acne (and other common skin diseases), but there is plenty of practical information in the book. The book has something for everyone, whether general reader or healthcare providers.

This book absolutely changed the way I think about my skin. Whitney Bowe explains cutting edge science about the skin microbiome and how good bacteria actually create healthy skin. It’s super fascinating and easy to read! Best of all, she includes a number of recommendations and actual recipes to start eating in a way that helps those good bacteria flourish. There’s a bunch of mask recipes too that I can’t wait to try! I highly recommend to anyone who wants to understand more about the science behind the “glow” and how to actually achieve it!
